Buyer

Location: Head Office (Watford) and/or on site locations in central London

A fantastic opportunity has opened for a buyer to join our office team, based in Watford. Acumen offers this junior role with the promise of onward professional development within the company.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To deal with day-to-day procurement requests received from site, including chasing incorrect or late deliveries to protect revenue.
  • To develop and maintain sound procurement procedures whereby materials are purchased at favorable rates and are fit for purpose.
  • To co-ordinate deliveries to site to meet the demands of the construction programme in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Assist site managers to ensure compliance with Construction Traffic Management Plans (CTMPs).
  • Assist site managers to ensure compliance with any project specific procurement policy and Acumen’s general procurement policy.
  • Assist site managers to comply with the Considerate Constructor’s code of practice as relating to procurement and deliveries.
  • Maintain and improve on-site practices relating to deliveries and advise/train site operatives through regular ‘toolbox’ talks or newsletters.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Understanding of building materials, their uses and how they are sold
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • IT skills – MS Office, Excel, Outlook, Word etc
  • Some industry experience as a buyer, working for a merchant or even at site level would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize your workload

  • Flexible & adaptable. Ability to work both alone and as part of a team

Assistant Site Manager

Location: West London
Duration: 1 year contract initially

Assistant Site Manager (Working Foreman) – High end residential refurbishment

We require an Assistant Site Manager to work on a 1 million pound residential scheme based in Kensington. As a growing company we can provide unlimited career opportunities and progression within the business and are excited about bringing a great new Assistant Site Manager to join our existing team.

The project will comprise excavation for new basement as well as above ground extension and internal fit-out. This initial project will last one year.

This role is as a full time working foreman with a strong trade background working 5 to 6 days per week. Site opening hours are 8-5 Monday to-Friday, 8-2 on Saturdays.

To apply for this role you must have previous experience of at least 5 years working on similar size and type projects. We are looking for someone that has previous experience specifically working on high end residential refurbishment schemes. As the ‘number 2’ on site your role will have a bias towards the day-to-day running of the site and managing the team. You will deputize and provide cover for the site manager or contracts manager. Your role will include:

  • Maintain good H&S and welfare practices on your site.
  • Provide operatives with a safe system of work
  • Monitor site operative’s attendance and time-keeping, manage quality of output.
  • Liaise with architects, engineers and other design professionals as necessary although this will mainly fall within the site manager’s remit.
  • Maintain site records including site induction and H&S logs, variations, Architect’s instructions, delivery notes, O&M records.
  • Manage master construction programme for the project and ensure sub-contractor adherence.
  • Manage neighbourly relations, keep complaints/comments log.
  • Coordinate deliveries, waste collections in accordance with CTMP.
  • Carry out quality control checks on in-house and sub-contracted elements.
  • Work alongside Site Manager and/or visiting contracts manager for preparation EOT and variation requests.

You must be willing to travel in on a daily basis (no parking is available at this site but close to tube).

Qualifications you must hold to apply for this role:

Support: Site IT equipment is provided and the position will be supported on a daily basis by our office staff. The visiting Construction Director will visit site regularly, providing full support to resolve any construction issues and maintain steady progress. Salary: Hourly rate of £18-20 before CIS deductions. We have full order book and do not generally hire for individual contracts.

  • Coordinate deliveries, waste collections in accordance with CTMP.
  • Carry out quality control checks on in-house and sub-contracted elements.
  • Work alongside visiting contracts manager for preparation EOT and variation requests.

You must be willing to travel in on a daily basis (no parking is available at this site but close to tube). You will need to hold a valid SMSTS, CSCS & First Aid certificates.

Quantity Surveyor

A fantastic opportunity has opened for a Quantity Surveyor to join our team, based in Watford, on a part time basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the preparation of competitive tenders and quotes
  • Maintain and develop our schedules of rates
  • Reconcile cost/value reports and profit forecasts
  • Ongoing development of a sub-contract/ Material data base
  • Negotiate subcontractor packages/ Process subcontractor requests for payment
  • Management and control of sub-contract accounts and variation accounts
  • Develop an understanding of the specific contract, ensuring compliance with conditions throughout.
  • Measure progress, submit valuations, submit final accounts and retention release requests
  • Completing a monthly cost / valuation report and cash flow for the designated projects
  • Where appropriate attend project related site meetings
  • Manage the expenditure on projects to optimise cashflow
  • Maintain and develop professional relationships with architects and clients, to help future business development

Candidate Requirements:

  • Experience with SOR Rate Books (preferable)
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent level of numeracy
  • IT skills – MS Office, Excel, Project, Word etc
  • Industry experience in the role of a Quantity Surveyor
