If you are looking for inspiration or just keen to see what the team has been up to...step this way! You can also find great photos of our teams building rooms on our Instagram page.

A retreat for Tim and Reene

Nestled amongst the established shrubbery, this garden retreat provides a quiet place to enjoy the evening sun... One of the challenges we often come across is where a garden is elevated at towards the rear - i.e. an uphill garden. In such cases there is a risk that, even a modestly sized garden room, will appear monolithic and overbearing. The topography of Tim and Reene's garden in West Hampstead meant that the garden room floor level would be one metre above the lawn level. Although not ideal, it is possible to create a garden room that is not awkward to get too or overbearing to look at.

A quiet place in which to potter around

When Laura asked Primrose for a proposal there were some critical things for us to consider. Obviously, plenty of natural light, which is essential for any craft work, but also some more practical requirements like a suitable power supply for the kiln and a beefy floor it to sit on!

An oasis for Jenny and Rupert

The original idea was to build a contemporary cedar-clad garden room which could be used as a work-from-home space and gym. With a Primrose project its OK to change the plan half way through and theses photos illustrate this perfectly!

A gym and changing area for Claire and Raymond

Having spent the last few years completely transforming their beautiful home in Radlett, their final project (for now) was to build a garden gym. Claire and Raymond were not newcomers to procuring building work and engaged Primrose only after visiting the Borehamwood display room and seeing a live project "in the flesh".

A Gym for Ketz

With a garden gym, the height of the ceiling is an important consideration This gym (with separate shed space) has a vaulted ceiling which makes for a light and airy place in which to work out. If you are planning a garden gym but are concerned that the ceiling height will be too low, fear not. Permitted Development rights allow for pitched roofs on garden buildings to be up to 3.5m at ridge height. As you can see, this results in a generous ceiling height internally. Our client's in Cassiobury, Watford, opted for a vaulted ceiling but if you prefer a flat roof design, you can also use strategically placed rooflights to increase the ceiling height over exercise equipment as needed.

Raymond's Radlett Retreat

There is perhaps more to this stunning garden gym than first meets the eye... Take for example, its 3m external height and large “frameless” skylight which create a light and spacious place to work-out. Look closer and you will see a discrete storage room which is set back from the gym and wraps around behind providing a huge 20m2 of workshop storage space.

David's Guest House

This 65m2 building replaced a dilapidated outbuilding to provide two multipurpose rooms, a kitchenette and a shower room!  Not all Primrose Projects are garden rooms that meet the permitted development rules. Sometimes, in order to fully meet the client's brief, planning consent must be obtained. This project required planning consent and building regulations approval. The thermal and structural performance of this building meets or exceeds the requirements for a new build house!

Down on the farm

When considering exterior cladding options, its worth thinking about how your garden room will fit in with other elements in the garden. The use of IRO architectural cladding in this design allowed the new outbuilding to sit inconspicuously among several farm out building and the main house, which also has traditional back feather edge cladding.

Work in Progress

This is where the magic happens! Each Primrose room is hand crafted on site by local tradesmen. The methods used reflect years of research and development. Unlike new or non-specialist garden room builders, Primrose know what works and what does not. Quality and suitability of materials is as important as the skill and care of the tradesperson.

Work from home space for Pauline and Rob

Here at Primrose we never shy away from the unusual, the tricky or the awkward... And so it was that Pauline and Rob decided to appoint Primrose to build a small garden office. Easy enough? Well, sort of...there was an established pond teaming with of wildlife to relocate, there were a number of rare and beautiful plants (including the corkscrew willow tree you see in the photos) and very little space in which to store materials or set up a working area - oh and Luna the puppy to keep safe!

A secluded workout space for Bogdan

Bogdan’s gym in Rickmansworth was built to take some serious weight! The floor was designed to take the point loads created by the weight racks and resistance machines. The rear wall is clad with full height mirror to give the space an unmistakable gym-like feel.
