Notting Hill Basement

Primrose completed this refurbishment and extension of a family home in the heart of Notting Hill.

The original house was out-dated and over formal, with a dark and dingy lower ground floor that was not suitable for the client’s young family.

Primrose added a new basement, dropped the level of the existing lower ground, and added light wells and skylights to help bring daylight in to these spaces. This created space for a gym, home cinema, and allowed the lower ground to become a relaxed open plan living and dining room.

The most exciting aspect of the project however was the introduction of a double height void between the lower and upper grounds, and the introduction of 6m high sliding glass doors through to the garden.

This connected all three areas and gives the house a real sense of space, perfect for modern family life.

The void also helps to create a link between the contemporary design of the lower two floors – defined by light coloured Dinesen flooring and Crittal type glazed screens, and the more restrained and traditional approach taken on the upper floors; where the design focussed more on precise detailing and subtle materiality.
